After a few weeks of speculation, yesterday saw some movement on the full-back market, as Sime Vrsaljko edged a bit closer to getting loaned to Inter.

The Serie A side are said to be paying €7m up front for the temporary deal, and can then sign him for €18m during that time, after which a handful of bonuses could be attainable to take the overall fee to €30m.

Why did this suddenly kick into gear? Gazzetta dello Sport believe it has partly to do with Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian talking to the press on Thursday morning.

The right-back has been Inter’s backup plan throughout this entire transfer window, and he admitted there could be something with the Serie A side in the works, telling journalists to wait and see what happens.

At this point, Gazzetta believe Atlético Madrid realised they could lose out on cashing in on one of their rotation players, whose valuation skyrocketed during the World Cup, and decided to move forward with Inter’s proposal.

So, without knowing it, the Manchester United defender, by talking to the press, managed to shoot himself in the foot and see one of his options disappear.

Smooth.
