Manchester United have suffered seven defeats in the last nine matches played in all competitions and have failed to score in five of those fixtures.

It was evident the Red Devils defence was nowhere close to being the best in the league and that area needed strengthening in the summer.

The 20-time English champions’ recent form has shown that they have failed to score from an open play since Scott McTominay netted against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

It’s clear that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must also focus on strengthening his side’s attack in the next transfer window, especially when Romelu Lukaku and his agent have publicly expressed the striker’s desire to play in Serie A.

L’Equipe points it towards Edinson Cavani, whose contract at Paris Saint-Germain will expire in 2020.

It’s claimed the Red Devils and Atletico Madrid have been following the Uruguay international for the last two years and the two clubs have never lost contact with his entourage.

Having paid €64m for the South American in 2013, PSG would like to cash in from the 32-year-old’s sale in the summer rather than allowing him leave for nothing a year later.

The report explains Cavani’s relationship with Thomas Tuchel has ‘not always been idyllic’ and he could be forced to settle for a place on the bench, with Kylian Mbappe being played up front next season.

A move to China or Middle East has been ruled out and the former Napoli star, who is happy at PSG, is not thinking about his future as his focus remains on Coupe de France final against Rennes on Saturday.

If Tuchel and PSG decide it is best to let go Cavani in the summer and if Mnchester United are genuinely keen on acquiring his services, he could provide an interesting option up front for Solskjaer next season.

Cavani has scored 22 goals and registered five assists in 28 appearances across competitions for PSG this campaign.
