When a Spanish newspaper wants to write a story about Gareth Bale leaving Real Madrid, their go-to Premier League destination is of course Manchester United.

The club have been linked with Bale since he was at Southampton and he was repeatedly held aloft as a successor to Ryan Giggs at Old Trafford.

A club not so often linked with Bale is Chelsea, but Sport bring them into the mix on Monday. It’s reported that Manchester United and Chelsea are both ‘loco’ over signing the Welshman from Real Madrid, and could be prepared to put up a good fee.

The Jose Mourinho link between the two clubs presents the potential for an interesting battle between Manchester United and Chelsea, and perhaps that’s why Sport are throwing them in together.

Sport are a Catalan newspaper and love to wind Real Madrid up. They’re also quite fond of poking sticks at Mourinho and the idea of him battling Chelsea for Bale is too good to not take advantage of.

And that idea of a big dramatic transfer saga may be more the motivation than Manchester United and Chelsea genuinely both being ‘loco’ for the player.
