Manchester United could look at a new forward in January following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit on Tuesday.
Having parted ways with the 37-year-old, the Red Devils could turn towards their former player, Memphis Depay.
That’s at least what Sport are reporting, and they say Manchester United are ‘accelerating’ their pursuit to sign the striker, as the Premier League side have already started work to try and close the deal for the 28-year-old in the winter market.
The Netherlands international has featured just three times for the La Liga club this term, and Xavi Hernández’s side are clear that he needs to leave in the mid-season window as his exit can help them make new additions.
Despite the ex-Lyon man’s struggles at the Camp Nou, Manchester United follow him, and it’s said Depay has been able to show he is in top form, when he came off the bench for the Netherlands at the World Cup.
The report further add Erik ten Hag is the great supporter of the Barca man and knows him ‘perfectly’, most likely from their time together at PSV Eindhoven, when the Manchester United manager was then assistant to Fred Rutten.
Depay’s deal expires in 2023 and the English club would be open to sign him in the winter market, as long as he is made available on a free transfer.
Barcelona, for their part, are ready to let Depay leave as a free agent as long as the rest of his wages are paid by the club he goes to.
