It was back in 2020 that Manchester City started being linked to Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, and with the player only getting better since then, it’s inevitable that those rumours continue.
The 22-year-old has been doing great this season, with 27 goals scored so far, including strikes against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and especially against Ajax, which took them to the Champions League’s quarter-finals.
Now as Benfica prepare to play Liverpool, we get to see the Portuguese media claiming that it will be a chance for Premier League clubs to see how he does against the Reds.
It’s newspaper Correio da Manhã who writes about it today. There they point out that Manchester City are one of the clubs who’ve ‘already shown interest’ in Darwin Nunez.
Now given the interest the striker has been drawing, that should obviously reflect in his price this summer. That’s why it’s said Benfica shall only accept negotiating the player’s exit for over €80m, which is still quite below his release clause, which is worth €150m.
Besides his great performances, another reason for a big price is the competition for him, as the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and West Ham United have all been interested in his signing as well.
With Manchester City battling Liverpool in the Premier League year after year, Darwin’s performance in the Champions League will show how well can he do against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
