Although we don’t normally cover social media stuff here at Sport Witness, we can’t help ourselves when the foreign press links Instagram posts to transfer rumours.

That’s what the Portuguese media is doing today, since the Benfica youngster Florentino Luís has pledged his love for the Lisbon side just after being linked to Manchester City.

The midfielder has made a throwback post on his Instagram with a picture showing him wearing a Benfica shirt as a kid, and wrote: “Already many years of eagle on the chest, I have much love for this club! It’s an honor to wear this shirt since I was a kid. Together!”

It didn’t take long for the newspapers to take this as a message to the rumours which have been circling the player in the past few days. Both Record and O Jogo do it today, recalling the news about Manchester City’s interest.

On Thursday, newspaper A Bola claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side are offering €35m for Florentino, but Benfica are looking to get at least €50m up front with another €10m in bonuses.

Now, could Florentino be making this post because he’s committed to the club or because he’s soon leaving Lisbon? We should have this answer in a couple of months.
