Needing at least three new full-backs before the beginning of the season, Manchester City are being linked with the pick of the bunch out there so far this summer.

For the right-back role, we’ve had Kyle Walker, Nelson Semedo and now Dani Alves, while the left-back role has seen the likes of Benjamin Mendy and Ryan Bertrand pushed towards the Etihad for hefty hypothetical fees.

The latest of the lot, however, makes the most sense: Raphaël Guerreiro.

Why? Because, much like Fabinho, who we’re surprised Guardiola isn’t going after, the Portuguese defender can play both at full-back or in midfield, as he demonstrated relatively efficiently last season at Borussia Dortmund.

According to Dahbia Hattabi, a journalist for FootMercato in France, Manchester City are ‘studying’ the prospect of signing the Bundesliga player alongside Juventus, who could target him were they to lose Alex Sandro to Chelsea in the coming weeks.

Before you start asking why a French journalist would know about an English club wanting a Portuguese player plying his trade in Germany, it’s worth remember that before being at Borussia Dortmund, the 23-year-old used to play for Lorient in Ligue 1.

Hattabi explains Guerreiro’s preference for now would be to stay with the German outfit, but we all know how quickly things can change during the transfer season.

Making 35 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund last year, the versatile defender scored seven goals and picked up 10 assists in a good first season in Germany.
