Nicolás Otamendi hasn’t convinced everyone at Manchester City since since joining on a £38m deal from Valencia in 2015, but has still managed to build some respect after two decent seasons at the club.

With 43 appearances under Pep Guardiola, the player was important in Manchester City’s last campaign, and that’s what a story from Super Deporte is based on to praise him today.

Heavy statistics and transfer news aren’t frequent mixed by sports outlets, but the newspaper uses three paragraphs, all based on Who Scored, to say Otamendi was one of the best City players this season.

Despite all of that they say Otamendi is on the market, with his future ‘open’, as he has many important offers to leave. What the player doesn’t know yet is if Pep Guardiola is counting on him for next season. The manager’s plans for the defence are said to be unclear to camp Otamendi, so the player must wait before making any decisions.

It’s a strange angle for Super Deporte to go with, because Valencia couldn’t afford to buy the defender back, but perhaps they’ve heard something from the player’s entourage which suggests a nervousness about Guardiola’s summer plans.
