If there was an award for ‘Unluckiest Player in the Premier League 2016’, would it go to Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany?

There are a few contenders, but surely the centre-back, backed to the hilt by Pep Guardiola, would have to be one of the favourites.

While we’re being nice about it and saying he’s unlucky, Sport/Foot Magazine in Belgium don’t see it that way, and even place Kompany as their number one Loser of 2016.

Finishing ahead of both former Belgium manager Marc Wilmots and ex-Anderlecht manager Besnik Hasi, the Manchester City defender is basically labeled a ‘has-been’.

The magazine write: “Vince the Prince, best player in the Premier League, probably the best defender in the world, Belgium and basically Belgium FA boss. All of that is so far away. When Guardiola says he still counts on him at City, we wonder if he’s just being funny.

“With the national team, his authority excesses have started to grate. No one even talks about his influence on the FA anymore. Kompany is a big injured body whose performances have failed to get crowds excited for some time now.”

The defender, who has only made five appearances for Manchester City so far this season, is currently nursing a knee injury, which is expecting to see him miss most, if not all, of the festive period.

It’s never nice to see a player struggle through so many injuries, especially when he should be entering his prime years as a centre-back (he’s only 30), but it seems that Sport/Foot have completely given up on him.

At least Guardiola hasn’t. Yet.
