Honduran newspaper Diário La Prensa brings a nice story today about Carlos Mejía, one of the most promising young players in the country.
The 18-year-old hadn’t seen his father, who also used to be a footballer, for eight years. All he knew was that Adonis Mejía lived in the United States.
Carlos went to play a tournament in Florida, and before travelling, decided to search his father’s name on Facebook. He found him, and managed to meet him with ‘no hard feelings’, as the outlet says.
Mejía got to the headlines in Honduras recently for being approved during a trial at Manchester City, despite not accepting the club’s invitation to join them. And that’s mentioned again in today’s report.
The revelation was made by club recruiter David Guity in an interview with outlet Diez in September. Asked why Mejía declined the chance, he said: “For financial reasons, and the 15-year-old boy in love with La Ceiba, he wanted to return, although he passed the test.”
“What they told me was that they did not reach an agreement. With that age there is little money that can be obtained, but a bright future. Another detail is that the mother got sick, we had to operate. Mejía got worried and came back.”
In the interview, Guity has also claimed that family problems are a big reason why Honduran players don’t move to European clubs.
“It may be a misfortune that many of these kids are children of single parents. Given that legal procedures must be done, it’s not easy… Another issue is that the Honduran player doesn’t have hunger. In Europe we work a lot.”
