Manchester City had an official at the match between Benfica and Vitoria Guimaraes on Saturday evening, reports Portuguese newspaper O Jogo. Benfica were 2-0 winners, and Manchester City weren’t the only club with a ‘spy’ present.
Joining Pep Guardiola’s emissary were officials from Manchester United, West Brom, West Ham, Arsenal, along with Villarreal, Valencia, Levante, Almeria, Huelva and Real Sociedad from Spain.
Manchester City have been repeatedly linked with Alex Grimaldo, including fake reports about Guardiola flying to Portugal, but he wasn’t in the team or on the bench, and wasn’t expected to be either.
The Premier League club have also been linked repeatedly with Ederson, Benfica’s 23 year old goalkeeper.
Guardiola has praised the player in the past, which has motivated the rumours, and it’s possible Manchester City are looking at the Brazilian as a long term option in goal.
Claudio Bravo hasn’t exactly been a runaway success for Guardiola, and Willy Caballero is 35 years old with a contract running out in June.
Ederson interest makes lots of sense.
