Manchester City are not close to signing Saul Niguez of Atletico Madrid, a source close to the situation has told Sport Witness.
Earlier today, ESPN reported that Pep Guardiola’s side have identified the Spaniard as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, with Barcelona holding a long standing interest.
It was also claimed the Camp Nou outfit have been made aware the player’s destination will be Manchester.
ESPN also suggests that Saul’s representative have been in talks with Ernesto Valverde’s side for the last few months and have told Barca that he cannot stay at Atletico anymore.
Sport Witness has been informed that so far, the English champions have not contacted the Elche-born midfielder’s camp to discuss a transfer, which is why Manchester City are not thought to be closing in on a deal to sign Saul in the summer.
Saul signed a nine-year deal with Diego Simeone’s side in 2017 and subsequently his contract at Atletico runs out in 2026.
