Such is the quality at Manchester City, breaking through and earning your spot is not exactly an easy task. Aleix Garcia knows that all too well.
The 22-year-old joined City from Villarreal back in 2016 and went straight into their U21 squad.
He only made 15 appearances for the U21s and was promoted to the first team squad in 2016, making nine appearances at that level. He’s since spent the last two years on loan with Girona, featuring 55 times, scoring three goals and registering four assists.
His loan spell came to an end this summer and Mundo Deportivo report he will return to City. In fact, he’s part of the squad travelling around Asia for pre-season.
However, according to them, Garcia is only returning to Manchester to sort out his future with Pep Guardiola. His contract expires next summer and he wants to know what the plan is.
They believe the most likely option is a sale given how packed with talent the current squad is. Garcia, for his part, is said to have gone to England ‘with a desire to succeed’ but is ‘now ready to do it elsewhere’.
One potential destination may be back to Girona, although it remains to be seen what Guardiola makes of the situation. With David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden ahead of him in the pecking order, it seems unlikely he’ll be staying.
