When Sporting youngster Nuno Mendes claimed he’d stay at the club, most Portuguese outlets took his word for granted and believed that the full-back will continue to play for the Lions for at least one more season.
Newspaper Correio da Manhã, however, comes up today with an article to say things are not that simple.
The outlet insists that ‘Manchester is on the horizon’, since Manchester City and Manchester United are still attentive to the possibility of signing the 18-year-old this summer.
The fact that Nuno Mendes turned down the transfer rumours is said to be a strategy made by him and his agent Miguel Pinho, which had already been used when Bruno Fernandes made his move to the Red Devils.
Correio da Manhã says Nuno Mendes’ transfer out of Sporting continues to be ‘prepared’, and Pinho wants to keep the good relationship with the Lions.
The newspaper points out that the player’s market value has gone from €7m to €25m in one year and there’s now a bigger possibility of an offer the Lisbon side can’t refuse.
Manchester City and Manchester United are labelled as the ‘most interested’ clubs, and it’s said a deal will be done for at least €40m up front, plus bonuses.
