As Vincent Kompany nears retirement, with Nicolas Otamendi not too far behind, Manchester City might have to start thinking about their future at centre-back, bringing fresh blood to compete for starting spots alongside John Stones and Aymeric Laporte.

Summer signing Philippe Sandler will certainly make a case for himself, but El Gol Digital in Spain believe Pep Guardiola has someone else in mind in Aïssa Mandi.

The Real Betis centre-back, who has a €30m release clause in his contract with the Spanish club, has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, as West Ham and Arsenal have both come knocking, without much success.

Manchester City could change that, as the Algeria international’s ability to bring the ball out of the defence with calm and poise would suit Guardiola’s style down to a T.

However, their claim the Premier League could ‘offer around €45m’ for his services sheds some doubt on the article, since all they need to bid is €30m to trigger his release clause.

Maybe El Gol Digital just ‘forgot’ about that detail.
