At the weekend, Sport explained that Manchester City are ‘on the lookout’ for Barcelona target Claudio Echeverri.
The 17-year-old is a product of River Plate’s youth system and was promoted to their first team earlier this year. He has drawn the attention of top European clubs after starring for Argentina at the U17 World Cup, where he managed five goals and an assist from seven games.
La Página Millonaria state Manchester City ‘had direct contact’ with the player’s family to know about his personal life and ask the conditions needed to take him away from River Plate.
The report adds the attacking midfielder’s deal lasts until December 2024 and includes a $25m [€22.9m] release clause. The Argentine club want to extend his contract and also raise the clause, but that hasn’t happened so far.
La Página Millonaria say Manchester City haven’t yet made an offer and only made contact to find out the terms needed to secure hiss services.
They do have plans to table one if a report from Estadio Deportivo is to be believed.
It’s claimed the Citizens and Chelsea are willing to take the chequebook out to sign him. There’s no mention of the fee the Premier League duo are willing to table, but both clubs could start a bidding war, which would put Echeverri beyond Barcelona’s reach.
