Benfica defender Tomás Araújo could be an ideal signing for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, even more so than the likes of Gonçalo Inácio.
That’s according to journalist Rafael Soares, via Glorioso 1904, who has appointed the defender as a potential target for Amorim in the January transfer window.
Manchester United are expected to be busy in the coming months, with most expecting the club to completely reshape the squad to better suit the system and style Amorim wants to implement at the club.
A growing list of names have already been linked with a move, with many seemingly expecting Amorim to completely raid Portuguese football for players he’s either worked with or knows after coming up against them.
Several reports have made it clear that he’s unhappy with his defensive options, despite Manchester United spending big on Lenny Yoro and Mathijs de Ligt in the summer.
A new central defender could be on his shopping list, particularly if he intends to stick with the three at the back formation that served him so well at Sporting Club de Portugal.
Soares thinks he should be looking at his old rivals Benfica and Araújo, who he feels would be an ideal fit at Old Trafford.
“I even think it makes more sense, because they are two central defenders who have the talent to leave Portugal,” he said on Record na Hora.
“But looking at what Rúben Amorim has done and the options he has had, for example, Gonçalo Inácio is a central defender playing on the left and there he has Lisandro Martínez, who seems to be a certainty in United’s 11.
“In the case of Tomás Araújo, and I’m very curious to see him in a three-central system, something that doesn’t happen at Benfica, due to all the quality he has on the ball, in addition to what he’s grown defensively. I think he could very well fit in in a system of three Rúben Amorim plants.”
