Diego Costa suffered a dip in form around the beginning of last season, but has returned strongly this season and is back among the goals. The Spaniard has scored 5 goals in the Premier League so far, and Antonio Conte clearly sees him as first choice upfront.

However, the 27-year-old was linked with a return to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window, and the Spanish club’s will to get their striker back has been an accepted reality in Spain for some time.

Unless Chelsea bring a replacement in then Atletico’s wish is likely to remain unfulfilled, Conte and squad simply need the Brazilian born striker.

His former Atletico teammate, Koke, has been speaking to Radio Marca, and was asked about Costa’s possible return to the club at that time. Koke insists he’d have wanted him to come back, but it wasn’t possible.

He said: “Diego had few amazing years at Atletico, he is an impressive player. Yes, I would have liked him to come back, make no mistake, but it wasn’t possible.”

Costa has another three years left on his contract at Chelsea, and has shown no signs of creating trouble to force a transfer.
