More than a teammate, Bernardo Silva will also be missing a friend with João Cancelo suddenly leaving Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The two have known each other since their time at Benfica’s youth ranks, and despite spending a few years together at the Premier League side, the fullback left for Bayern Munich on a loan until the end of the season in a rather surprising transfer.

Bernardo Silva was interviewed by the Portuguese press at the weekend, and among the questions, there was one about Cancelo leaving Manchester City last month.

The midfielder made it clear his friend will be missed at the club, despite claiming he’s actually glad that his request was attended.

“Happy for him, because it was the path he chose to continue happily in his life,” Bernardo Silva told Eleven Sports.

“Sad for the team and for me, because I won’t be able to count on him every day. He knows that he is a person that I like a lot. But he made the best decision for him and I’m really happy for him.”

In the same interview, Bernardo Silva was also asked about Enzo Fernandez‘ record transfer from Benfica to Chelsea. He claimed to be sad that the Argentine left the Eagles after such a short time at the club, but is also happy that another former player from the Lisbon side will be joining him in the Premier League.
