Newcastle United defender Emil Krafth has admitted he “would love to stay” at the club long-term but is unsure whether talks will be opened over a new deal.
The full-back has been speaking to Fotboll Skanalen about his current situation and whether that could lead to a move away from Newcastle in the near future.
The Swedish defender has been with the Magpies since August 2019 but has been hit by injuries in those years, only managing 66 appearances to date.
He is very much a squad player in Eddie Howe’s set up at this moment in time and that means a decision is yet to be made about his future, with his contract expiring in June next year and talks yet to start over a new deal.
He would like to stay if Newcastle will have him but admits that talks are yet to happen as he’s been focused on returning to full fitness.
“I haven’t reflected on it that much, as my focus has been on coming back and playing football. Then you have to take it as it comes,” he said.
“It is clear that you talk a little, but not especially. It’s not something I focus on. I just want to come back and play football. What happens, happens and then you have to take it. We are enjoying ourselves very much in Newcastle.”
With his contract expiring next summer, Krafth is free to talk to other clubs about a pre-contract agreement from January should he wish.
That option could be taken away from him if Newcastle decide to take up an option they hold in his contract to extend his stay by another year.
As that’s yet to happen he could be facing transfer talks in January but insists that’s not currently a part of his thinking.
“I haven’t thought about it yet. It depends a bit on what the club wants and signals, but they haven’t signalled anything so far. We’ll see,” he added.
“My family and I enjoy Newcastle very well, so we can imagine staying. We would love to stay.”
