Germany legend Lothar Matthäus has warned Timo Werner against making a move to Liverpool, urging him to stick with RB Leipzig instead.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield for the best part of a year, with Jürgen Klopp seemingly keen to add him to his forward line.

Rumours about a move have intensified in the last few months, with Werner in scintillating form so far, scoring 27 goals and registering 12 assists in 36 games.

Barely a day goes by in which Liverpool are not linked, particularly as a transfer clause in the German’s contract is set to expire ahead of the summer.

Where he would fit in at Liverpool is up for debate, though, given their front three is well established and currently at their peak.

That is something Matthäus thinks the player should consider, asking if he’d be happy being an ‘additional player’ at Anfield.

“I can imagine that Timo Werner will not leave Leipzig after all,” he told SportBild.

“The clear announcement to Bayern that he doesn’t want to come shows that he wants to have peace and quiet.

“With Liverpool, he would have to ask himself whether he wouldn’t be too sad as an additional player.

“If Leipzig show that they can continue to play for titles in the future, then that, in combination with coach Nagelsmann, would be the best argument to remain.”
