Following the rumours of Liverpool and Real Madrid interest in Flamengo midfielder João Gomes, club vice-president Marcos Braz has now spoken about the subject.

The midfielder has finally agreed to a new contract with the Rio de Janeiro side, and that’s a very good reason for the club to feel more comfortable to talk about his market situation.

With quotes relayed by ESPN Brasil, Marcos Braz responded to the rumours, claiming there’s been no contact for the player, who’s now committed to Flamengo until 2027.

“There was no proposal for João Gomes, there was no consultation for him. So, it’s a lot of lies that have been propagated about João Gomes since the beginning of these renewal issues. But if you ask me if next year, in the middle of the year, I think there will be something, I’ll say: ‘I think’. Due to the size of the player, for what he has become, for being a player, today, Flamengo’s starter. So, it’s natural for the market out there to pass a magnifying glass over this player, but there’s nothing. We are very happy and I am absolutely sure that he is very happy with the Flamengo board.”

ESPN Brasil point out that Gomes had recently spoken on Instagram regarding his wish of playing for Liverpool, and rumours from Argentina said Real Madrid wanted to pay €30m for his signing.

On Tuesday, Sport Witness featured a story explaining the recent rumours on Liverpool and João Gomes, pointing out some quotes have been recycled to make the story stronger than it actually was.

We also brought information that the Reds have no active interest in the player.

Braz’s quotes seem to have backed that up.
