Manchester United were regularly named as one of the interested sides in Denis Zakaria, before the Borussia Mönchengladbach player suffered a serious injury in March 2020.
The midfielder returned to action last November and has regained his best version this season. His impressive displays seem to have caught the Red Devils’ attention again, while AS Roma and other clubs also retain an interest in the 25-year-old.
On November 12th, Roma Giallorossa stated the Premier League side are ‘watching’ Zakaria.
Five days later, Sportitalia journalist Gianluigi Longari reported United have made a ‘new contact’ to sign the Switzerland international. Later that day, Blick explained United will have to pay €10-12m to secure the Switzerland international’s signature in January.
Zakaria has seven months left on his contract and Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has already admitted his side will have a decision to make if a player asks to leave the club.
These claims are relayed by Bild, who then add Zakaria signing a new deal with his current employer is ruled out. That’s because he is ‘looking for a new challenge’.
Gladbach eliminated Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal this season and having made it to the last 16, they are in contention to win the cup competition. They face Hannover 96 in the next round on January 18th.
With Zakaria making a decision to leave, Eberl must decide whether to retain him until the end of the season to improve the club’s chances of winning silverware or sell him in January, in order to avoid losing the midfielder for nothing next summer.
United are in the picture to sign Zakaria and Mönchengladbach have a tough decision to make for the winter window.
Bild say the situation is an ‘absolute nightmare’ for Eberl, who seems to be ‘in the Zakaria trap’.
