Celtic are currently top of the Scottish Premiership and happy under the management of Ange Postecoglou, but there’s been times in the past when the Glasgow club, and their fans, weren’t so keen on their manager.
Football is full of redemption arcs and for former Celtic manager Ronny Deila, his appears to be at Standard Liege.
Deila has been in charge of the Belgian side since July last year, when he arrived after departing American side New York City after a two-year spell in the States.
He has been on something of a tour of the world since leaving Celtic in 2016, managing Valerenga for four years in an attempt to get over his disappointing two years at Celtic Park. He’s now at Liege and proving to be a big hit since his arrival.
Het Laatste Niuews cover that today, with the club planning on selling t-shirts that honour their manager.
They state that the Norwegian coach has pulled the Rouches ‘out of the doldrums’ and turned a side who finished 14th last season into top six contenders.
All is well at the club at present, with the players ‘fond’ of their manager and a ‘click’ with the supporters there also.
Liege are aware of that and now plan to ‘capitalise’ on the popularity of the coach by selling special t-shirts, designed by Deila, in the club shop in the coming weeks.
While that is unlikely to generate much revenue it’s seen as a sign of ‘how popular’ Deila is at the club, with HLN explaining that rarely has a manager ‘fit so well’ with the DNA of a club.
Indeed his work has not gone unnoticed, with Club Brugge reportedly eyeing him up as a potential replacement for Scott Parker.
Whether that turns into something serious remains to be seen but it would be a shame for Deila and Liege to depart, with the coach having found something in Belgium that he couldn’t at Celtic.
