On June 8th it was reported in Portugal that Liverpool were prepared to pay €40m for Sporting’s Gelson Martins.

On June 9th that figure had gone up to a possible €45m. Then on Saturday, June 17th, it was reported that Liverpool had made it known to Sporting they’d be prepared to pay €50m.

Sunday’s edition of Record says that, actually, Sporting haven’t received a single offer for Gelson Martins. Therefore, Liverpool either simply contact Sporting to share their idea of a transfer offer, and never make it, or the whole thing is make-believe.

With Liverpool’s approach to transfers this summer it’s hard to work out whether the Portuguese media are imagining the whole thing up, and that’s why Sporting haven’t received an offer, or if there’s some strange game being played at Anfield.

Record claim that Sporting are only willing to sell Gelson Martins for €60m, and we don’t buy that either. It’s got to be considered likely that €50m would be accepted if such an offer ever actually arrives from Liverpool.
