Perhaps the unlikeliest of potential heroes going into the Merseyside derby on Sunday, Divock Origi and his anticipation/patience are the reason why Liverpool walked away with three points instead of one.

His open goal header following Jordan Pickford’s rather clumsy attempt at dealing with Virgil Van Dijk’s loopy volley sealed the victory for Jürgen Klopp’s men, and the Belgian expressed his delight at being able to help his team out for the first time in the league since August 2017.

Speaking to RMC Sport after the game, he said: “It’s huge. I’m happy. I worked so hard. I had difficult moments, which is good for a player my age. I’m not that young anymore, and it’s moments like those that help you grow and make goals like this one even more special. I’m very happy for myself, the team, the club, for the city too, for the fans, it’s special.”

Loaned out to Wolfsburg all of last season, the 23-year-old stayed at Anfield for the current campaign, making just his second appearance of the season after an 11 minute cameo against Red Star in the Champions League early last month.

Since joining Liverpool from Lille for £11.4m back in 2014, the Belgium international has made 79 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals and picking up seven assists.

However, we’ve got a feeling that this goal, as easy as it may have been to score, will feel a bit more special than a lot of the others he’s scored throughout his career.
