Liverpool and Chelsea have reportedly lost the race for the Sporting midfielder João Mário.

The 23-year-old is now expected to join Inter Milan in a €45m deal. The Italian side were the only ones able to convince Sporting and will pay them €10m up front and the other €35m next summer.

Saturday’s edition of O Jogo specifically states that Liverpool, Chelsea and PSG lost the race, as Frank De Boer’s strong wish to have the player was vital for the deal to happen.

Record on Saturday says there were recent rumors that Chelsea could be back on the battle, but they’ve learned the Blues are not an option anymore.

This could be the end of one of the longest sagas of the summer. Alongside Liverpool and Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal were much linked to the player as well.

The player’s father revealed a €40m Liverpool bid for the player in July, but it seems it fell just short.
