The Borussia Dortmund striker spent much of last season acting like he was waiting to be snapped up by one of the world’s biggest clubs. With his discipline at Dortmund coming into question more than once, Aubameyang didn’t seem to care.
Now it’s the end of June and it doesn’t appear that any of the world’s biggest clubs have yet made a move for the striker. Liverpool have been dragged into the equation more than once, and Sunday’s edition of L’Equipe quesitons if the Anfield club can even afford the move.
Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund background is probably a big factor behind Aubameyang links, but L’Equipe suggest there’s not enough money available. After Liverpool spent €40m (L’Equipe’s figure, other figures are available) on Mohamed Salah, the French newspaper wonder how deep the club’s pot is.
But that’s probably the wrong question. More pressing would be: Do Liverpool need to spend €70m on Aubameyang?
With Salah and Sadio Mane now likely to take the wings, and Roberto Firmino taking the No.9 shirt, it wouldn’t appear that Klopp is keeping a place for Aubameyang.
So L’Equipe are correct, there are big questions to be asked about Liverpool interest, but they’re likely more to do with Klopp’s plans than money.
