At the beginning of November, France Football were pretty blunt on the Liverpool future of Mamadou Sakho. Looking at the Frenchman’s situation, it was stated he would ‘99.9%’ leave Liverpool during the January transfer window.

Sakho had been a fan favourite at Liverpool but looked to try and make too much mileage out of that and annoyed Jurgen Klopp whilst on pre-season tour. The German manager was so angered that he sent Sakho back to Liverpool, and that seems to have been the beginning of the end game.

The defender had issues last season when he was caught up in a failed drug test. Whilst he was eventually cleared from the charge, Sakho had still been taking medication without the Premier League club’s blessing. It led to a slip which saw his Liverpool career drift away and also his national team chances, missing out on Euro 2016.

The Guardian follow up on Sakho’s future and they too believe an exit is close, stating: ‘Liverpool will intensify efforts to sell Mamadou Sakho in January’.

Whilst Liverpool try and get the transfer over the line, speculation will continue as to where the defender will end up.

Linked with Lille in November, a return to France may well be the best option. Given the player’s relatively high wages, Liverpool may well have subsidise the player on a loan, hoping he can show enough form to make a club buy him out of his contract which lasts until June 2020.

Failing that, there are several clubs in the Turkish league looking for a defender in the winter market.
