Sold much to everyone’s surprise to Barcelona after an injury plagued final season at Arsenal, Thomas Vermaelen’s first season in Spain ended with only 66 minutes of football.

Last year was a slight improvement, with the Belgian defender making 20 appearances for the La Liga BBVA champions, doing just about enough to earn himself a spot in Marc Wilmots’ squad for the 2016 Euros.

Playing the full 90 minutes against Italy, the defender still has some admirers back in England, with Sport in Spain claiming both Liverpool and West Ham would be interested in his services.

At 28, and hopefully with the worst of his injuries behind him, the centre-back could end up being a good signing for those willing to take the risk.

His ability was clearly on display during his first few seasons with Arsenal, and the player himself will be looking to regina such heights in years to come.

He just needs to be given the chance.
