Liverpool ‘tried’ signing Denis Zakaria before Chelsea ended up securing his services on a loan deal from Juventus on deadline day.
That’s according to Calciomercato, who state the Merseyside club made an attempt for the 25-year-old towards the end of the summer window.
Jürgen Klopp has seen Liverpool struggle in the league as they have managed only two wins from six matches this season. It would have been only one win if not for Fábio Carvalho’s late winner against Newcastle United.
The German manager has seen several of his players struggle with injuries this season, especially in the middle of the pitch, as Thiago Alcântara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keïta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are currently on the sidelines.
Liverpool strengthened their midfield by signing Arthur on loan from Juve. Prior to landing the Brazilian, the Reds carried out polls for his club teammate, Zakaria. The idea didn’t take shape because there was no financial agreement.
Calciomercato doesn’t make it clear whether the Premier League side being ‘without an economic agreement’ was with Juventus, Zakaria or both.
Liverpool’s failure allowed Chelsea to swoop in for Zakaria, who quickly managed to bring the Swiss midfielder to Stamford Bridge.
