Liverpool’s interest in Sporting youngster Nuno Mendes isn’t something new. For the past month, we’ve seen reports from Portugal saying the Reds are following the 18-year-old.

Today, newspaper Correio da Manhã brings a detailed piece on this chase, claiming the Anfield side, and specifically Jurgen Klopp, have been pretty impressed with the fullback’s potential.

The outlet tells the whole story about this pursuit. They say it ‘intensified’ last month, when Manchester United started being linked to the player and the news reached England.

Since then, Liverpool first became interested following Mendes’ good first team debut against Paços Ferreira, and the German manager gave orders for the club to keep an eye on him.

That’s why the Reds scouted the player last week in the match against Tondela, which Sporting qon 2-0. Correio da Manhã insists the evaluation was ‘very positive’.

As we covered last week, Mendes has just renewed his contract with Sporting. He signed a five-year deal which includes a release clause of €45m.
