Didi Hamann quite often doesn’t get the respect he deserves. The German midfielder had a great Liverpool career and was crucial in their 2015 Champions League Final triumph over AC Milan, coming on a substitute with the game 3-0, and helping to turn the game around.
Others tend to get more credit than Hamann, and sometimes it feels he’s pushed out of the Liverpool circle, but current Anfield German Emre Cann has the highest of respect for the former midfielder.
SportBild asked Can about the parallels drawn between the two players, and the Liverpool midfielder responded: “Actually, I am compared to Didi a lot in and around the club. Especially with the fans writing in the forums that I have the potential to become the next Didi Hamann for Liverpool.
“This is a big compliment for me. He’s a legend here, I want to be. And I would like to do what he has achieved here. Last season Jurgen Klopp once again showed the video as Liverpool came back from 0-3 at half time in the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan, after the substitution of Didi they still caught up and took the title. These pictures will be in the head at Liverpool for 100 years.”
Emre Can is serious in his aim to be a Liverpool great and, given Klopp is his manager and Hamann the person he wishes to emulate, the German media love the idea. At Liverpool, Hamann won the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two FA Cups, and two League Cups.
There’s a long way for Emre Can to go, but Liverpool’s latest German midfielder is keen to copy a player he holds high as an Anfield legend.
