Virgil van Dijk helped Liverpool to another trophy at the weekend, as Jurgen Klopp’s men beat Chelsea in the EFL Cup final.
It was a hard fought victory, with the Reds beating Thomas Tuchel’s men on penalties, and now the Dutchman can work for more glory this season, and also look ahead to the World Cup in Qatar.
The Netherlands have already qualified for the competition, and Van Dijk will captain the side at the tournament, which starts in November of this year.
De Telegraaf today have a feature on the Dutch national deaf team, who are hoping to take part in the Deaflympics in Brazil in May. Unfortunately, they’ve been facing financial barriers to that, and the Liverpool defender has decided to step in and do what he can.
In an effort to help, Van Dijk has made a ‘substantial private donation’ to assist with funding of the squad’s trip to Brazil. De Telegraaf quote him as saying: “I have discussed this with my family and we would like to help. That’s why we support these guys, who have done a great job moving from 21st to 7th place in the world ranking. I admire the way these guys practice their sport.”
The Liverpool player’s shirt from the Chelsea match has also been donated, and will go to the highest bidder. Offers need to be sent to shirtactie@nederlandsdovenelf tal.nl, De Telegraaf don’t share a closing date.
