Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum still believes his national manager Danny Blind can turn things around for Holland, despite recent poor results. Blind is under further pressure after Holland yet again lost at home on Friday night, this time to Greece.
Voetbal International have reported on comments Wijnaldum made in the lead up to Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Sweden in which the Liverpool star accepted Blind would be questioned following Holland’s failure to make this summer’s Euros.
Wijnaldum said you always want the results to be good, and compared Blind’s problems to that of Jose Mourinho’s last season. Liverpool’s summer signing pointed out Mourinho won the league with Chelsea the previous season, but was sacked because the results were poor.
“Of course I understand in the outside world there was questioning after we failed to qualify for the European Championships. You always like the results to be good. But you can’t say that Jose Mourinho tactically knows nothing. Two years ago he became champion with Chelsea and last season he was out. He is also a good coach,” said the Liverpool midfielder when asked about Blind’s problems.
Following the defeat 2-1 defeat to Greece, Blind risks being sacked if he doesn’t get anything out of the game with Sweden. Since replacing Guus Hiddink the former Ajax star hasn’t been able to turn things around, and his problems weren’t helped last week when Marco van Basten stepped down from his role with Holland.
