Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs over the past year or so, and most recently it’s been Manchester United getting most of the stories.

The Sporting player has been the subject of countless Portuguese media articles which detail interest from the Old Trafford club and talk up the player’s €100m release clause.

Interestingly, in a Saturday article from Record, the Red Devils don’t get a mention.

Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid ‘have shown interest’ in signing Fernandes, but they haven’t submitted a ‘formal offer’ yet.

Should a good offer come from Liverpool or anyone else, then it’s stated the player won’t be held hostage in Lisbon.

Record explain that when Fernandes returned to Sporting in the summer, having rescinded his contract following attacks at the club’s training centre, the then ‘Management Committee’ agreed to a private release clause of €35m, much less than the official €100m.

The Portuguese newspaper don’t believe this is enforceable, and at worse would lead to private legal action for compensation from the player’s representatives. However, just to be safe, they plan to give the player a renewal, but keep the official clause at €100m.

It may be worthwhile for Liverpool and others to find out the exact details behind this €35m clause.
