Yesterday, Liverpool were picked up as the new club showing interest in Sporting winger Gelson Martins. A story from A Bola said the Reds would be keen on signing the player this summer, and the Portuguese side would be demanding at least €50m for the transfer. That’s just a little less than his €60m release clause.
Well, it didn’t take long until they published an update. The very same A Bola is now coming with Liverpool’s intentions, and the Anfield Road side would be prepared to offer up to €40m for the youngster.
The newspaper obviously says that’s not enough for Sporting. The club’s idea is to make a record with the sale, so Gelson would have to leave for more than João Mario, who joined Inter Milan last summer for €40m + €5m in bonuses.
It’s claimed that Liverpool’s offer to Gelson is good. The player would make €3.5m gross per season at the Premier League club, something very ‘convincing’.
But it will still take a little more to reach an agreement with Sporting. Summer is the time of the year when Portuguese clubs have the chance to make real money, and Gelson Martins is Sporting’s biggest hope to cash in €50m+ in the next few months.
Our bet? He can leave for less. But Liverpool will have to be patient.
