With a contract expiring at the end of the season, Georginio Wijnaldum has refused to talk to the media about his situation at Liverpool.
Barcelona showed interest in the 30-year-old during the summer, but they couldn’t get the midfielder away from the Merseyside club.
Friday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo explains Ronald Koeman sees the need to bring in a new midfielder with pace and power to face opposition of ‘maximum physical demand’.
The Dutch coach believes it is necessary to bring in a new midfielder, to increase the intensity, someone who can start movements from his own half and move to the opposition half looking to score a goal.
Wijnaldum ‘totally fits into that profile’, not only to play in Koeman’s 4-2-3-1 formation, but also to contribute with defensive work.
Koeman, however, is aware his compatriot’s signing in January is ‘almost impossible’ due to the Blaugrana’s ‘economic situation’.
The La Liga side’s priority is to sign a new centre-back and forward in the winter market, and if their manager wants a midfielder, it becomes ‘even more complicated’ for the Spanish giants.
Should Barcelona fail to sign Wijnaldum in January, they will have another opportunity to take him on a free transfer next summer, provided Jürgen Klopp’s star doesn’t sign an extension at Anfield.
