Argentina beat Chile 3-0 on Friday, and ahead of the match there’d been injury concerns around Alexis Mac Allister. Manager Lionel Scaloni said the Liverpool midfielder had missed a training session because he was ‘overloaded’ and in pain.
Despite that he managed to play 79 minutes against Chile, even scoring a goal in the 3-0 victory, but has been facing fitness worries since.
Ahead of Tuesday’s match against Colombia, Ole quote Scaloni as saying: “The team is doing well. Recovering a bit of strength from the game the other day, with some typical ailments from the game. Nico trained separately, Alexis did it with us. We’ll see how things evolve.”
Ole, Argentina’s major sports newspaper, report the Liverpool player has ‘an overload in his right adductor muscle’ and has had the issue since he arrived for international duty.
Essentially, he’s carrying a groin problem. The type of injury which can be made worse if played through.
Argentina are currently top of the South America World Cup qualifying group. Six teams go through and they will easily be one of those, so it may be the time for Scaloni to think about the rest of Mac Allister’s season and not gamble again.
Arne Slot will certainly be hoping so.
