Dutch players will be walking a diplomatic tightrope during the current international break, as media in the Netherlands asks as many new-manager questions as possible.
Dick Advocaat is currently in charge of Oranje, but it’s expected he’ll step aside for a younger manager pretty soon. Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum was greeted on arrival in Noordwijk by questions about Ronald Koeman potentially getting the big national job.
Being a Liverpool player, Wijnaldum will have seen Koeman’s Everton crisis unfold locally, but the Dutch coach’s first season at Goodison Park was widely seen as a triumph, helping build an unsustainable level of optimism.
Wijnaldum said the only thing he could, and is quoted by De Telegraaf stating: “A good trainer. He’s proved that. If Dick Advocaat would leave, he’s a good option.”
The Liverpool midfielder will probably be asked about all the other candidates over the rest of the international break, and have to give equally diplomatic replies.
Koeman is one of the favourites to take on the Netherlands job, and that was the case even before his Everton sacking finally came.
