Did you know that Liverpool need a centre-back?
We know, we know… You might have missed the memo, but following the injuries of Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, Jürgen Klopp’s side have struggled in defence, having to bring in the likes of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak during the January transfer window.
Neither are likely long-term solutions to add quality in depth to a rather thin squad, which is why we’ve seen bigger names linked with a move to Anfield on a regular basis.
The latest appears to be Alessandro Bastoni, currently at Inter, where he is shining under Antonio Conte.
The centre-back has demonstrated exactly why the Serie A club spent £28m on him from Atalanta, and his performances have caught the eye of bigger clubs.
Gazzetta dello Sport, on their website, explain Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are all interested, describing them as ‘the last clubs in order of time to show some interest in him, and who would have no problem shelling out (at least) €50m’.
Refusing to spend big in January, as shown by the cheap deal for Davies and loan for Kabak, it was clear those in charge at Anfield weren’t interested in committing to anyone important midway through a season, with this summer allowing them more time to find the right man.
The problem is that, even with their financial issues, Inter aren’t interested in selling Bastoni in the slightest, with the same applying to Nicolò Barrella, both described as ‘the future of Inter and the national team’.
