Liverpool and Newcastle United are expected to share the same scouting task at the weekend, as transfer efforts heat up ahead of the summer.

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, both English clubs will have representatives in Lisbon watching the derby between Sporting and Benfica.

The focus for Liverpool and Newcastle is the same: Lion’ midfielder Manuel Ugarte, in whom they’ve both been interested in and linked to in the past few weeks.

The newspaper doesn’t have many details on whether the Reds or Magpies lead the race at this stage, only pointing out that he’s protected by Sporting with a €60m release clause.

What should just be pointed out is that Liverpool and Newcastle are not the only Premier League clubs battling for Ugarte.

On Wednesday, newspaper A Bola featured a story about Aston Villa’s contacts to sign the Uruguayan.

They were quite optimistic about the possibility of his move to Villa Park, claiming Unai Emery’s side stand as the ‘most likely’ destination for the player at this time.

So that may be a very good reason for Reds and Magpies to hurry up with their pursuit.
