Among the controversies from the last call-up made by Brazil manager Tite, there were the doubts regarding the return of Philippe Coutinho to the squad.

The winger has hardly found his best form since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018, but it turns out that his 11 appearances for the Catalan side this season were enough for him to return to the Seleção.

Tite was of course quizzed about it in a press conference on Wednesday, and when answering the question, he claimed that his intention is to bring back the Coutinho who was seen at Liverpool during his years in the Premier League.

“The Couto of today is not the best Couto. But he’s a great Couto. He has an average situation and a projection of a high level athlete,” said Tite (via UOL).

“We are helping to bring what he is and what he was at Liverpool. This whole process is also up to us. Even knowing that now he also has conditions, if not for the whole game, but within the need to be able to contribute, give the share.”

Between 2013 and 2018, Philippe Coutinho scored 54 goals and contributed 45 assists in 201 appearances for Liverpool. Those were the years when he was frequently called up by the national team.

Not doing that great for Bayern Munich and Barcelona, he last played for Brazil over a year ago, and now has a new chance to prove himself and try to get a place at the 2022 World Cup.
