Liverpool summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum has drawn comparisons between former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal and his current club boss Jurgen Klopp. The Holland international recently joined Liverpool from Newcastle United after impressing in his debut season in England.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Wijnaldum was asked about Holland’s efforts in the last World Cup under the departed Manchester United coach. The Dutchman said with Van Gaal in charge the team was forged in the same way Klopp has done whilst at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum believes Liverpool doesn’t have the best players in the Premier League, but feels if you have the right plan then you can succeed.

“Van Gaal forged the team. Klopp does exactly the same. Liverpool does not have the best players in the Premier League, but that does not matter. Not always the best teams win, but the team with the best plan,” said the Liverpool player.

Under Van Gaal Holland reached the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup when they were eliminated by Argentina on penalties. Van Gaal stepped down after the competition to manage Manchester United, and since then the national team has struggled under Gus Hiddink and now Danny Blind.
