Liverpool and Manchester City today get a new mention in the race for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
That comes from a story by Portuguese newspaper Record. They feature a piece claiming the player already knows he’s in Argentina’s squad for the World Cup, and will be leaving Lisbon to join his teammates in Qatar on Monday.
Fernandez had an impressive impact at Benfica since the €12m move from River Plate in the summer. And his few months at the club were enough for him to draw the interest from other European sides.
So Record writes that clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City have already watched him in the Champions League, and the fact he’ll be in the World Cup now ‘whets’ their ‘appetite’ for the signing.
Benfica know about the interest Fernandez is drawing, and that’s why they are already getting prepared to sell the midfielder at the end of the season.
The problem is that some clubs, such as Manchester United, are already planning to sign him in January. So that’s a reason not only for the Eagles to get prepared, but probably also for Liverpool and Manchester City to be ready for a winter battle.
Just a few months after his arrival in Lisbon, Fernandez is now valued by Transfermarkt at €35m, and protected by a €120m release clause.
