Liverpool have made an approach for Sporting winger Pedro Gonçalves, better known as Pote, according to reports from Portugal today.

Newspaper Record is the one claiming the Reds held ‘informal contacts’ with the Lisbon side, although the conversations haven’t turned into serious negotiations at this stage.

Sporting, who are battling for the league title, want to keep Pote at least until the end of the season, and are therefore totally against a January move.

Signed in a €6.5m deal from Famalicão last summer, the 22-year-old winger is now protected by the Lions with a contract until 2025 and a release clause of €60m.

So that’s the price they’d demand for a sale for now.

With 12 goals this season, Pote is the Portuguese League’s top scorer, and could lead Sporting to their first league title after many years.

The interest from English clubs is something that pleases the player, which would be handy for Liverpool, although he’s also committed to helping the Lions achieve their objectives this season.

Sporting are only expected to consider the possibility of a sale in the summer.
