A couple of days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Portugal of Liverpool interest in Francisco Ferreira. The Premier League club were said to be ‘studying the possibility’ of signing ‘Ferro’, a central defender, in the January transfer window.
Ferro plays for Benfica’s B team and O Jogo claimed Liverpool have been watching the 20 year old for over a year, with the interest going all the way up to manager Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool’s outline plan is to make sure they don’t have defensive problems in the future, hence looking for a young defender full of potential to sign. There had also been efforts from the Merseyside club in the summer window, which obviously came to nothing.
These stories in Portugal often completely disappear, especially when they come out at the weekend and the English media don’t get too much of a bite into it. This time things may be different, with another Portuguese newspaper carrying things on.
A Bola quote the player’s agent Ulisses Santos as saying: “I can’t deny that Liverpool was one of the clubs that approached me and, as well, Benfica, Ferro and myself, we understand it’s not to be the moment.”
Whilst the numbers from Liverpool are said to be ‘interesting’, Santos is well aware Benfica have no interest in selling, and that’s why they’re confident a sale isn’t happening.
Benfica feel they’d be served better by waiting until Ferro gets to the first team, and then any transfer fee, from Liverpool or elsewhere, will almost certainly be much higher.
