There is little doubt over the status Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt holds among Liverpool fans. The Dutchman spent six seasons at the Premier League club, and quickly became a fan favourite.

Kuyt left Liverpool at the end of the 2011/12 season for Fenerbahce, and is set to face the Turkish club on Thursday with Feyenoord on Thursday in the Europa League.

Ahead of their game against the Turkish side, Kuyt has been speaking to UEFA’s official website, and was asked what makes him a fan favourite at every club he plays for.

He said: “In a way, all the clubs I’ve played are similar. Rotterdam, Liverpool, Istanbul are port cities, but also cities where people have to work very hard, and I have always identified myself with those people.

“I like to work hard and do whatever it takes for the team. It’s something that people have always appreciated over the years.”

The 36-year-old, who won the League Cup at Anfield, is showing no signs of fading away, and is still very much going strong.
