In the summer of 2023, RB Leipzig saw Dominik Szoboszlai and Joško Gvardiol leave for Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.
The Reds signed the midfielder by activating his release clause while Manchester City paid around €90m for the defender.
Both players have already returned to the Bundesliga side with Liverpool and Manchester City. Arne Slot’s side sealed a 1-0 win over the German club in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Hungary international, who played the full 90 minutes for Liverpool yesterday, had an opportunity to say goodbye to Leipzig and their fans prior to the kick off. This seems to have been planned by his former club, according to Bild.
Liverpool prevented the 23-year-old’s Leipzig farewell because they didn’t want him to be distracted for the game. It’s explained Leipzig present departed players with a ‘bronze cast bull as a farewell gift’, but Slot’s side weren’t interested in this.
Last season, Gvardiol returned to Leipzig with Pep Guardiola’s side. Bild say Manchester City also prevented the 22-year-old Croatian from having a farewell before kick off.
