Taiwo Awoniyi signed for Liverpool in 2015, and since then he’s been on loans to FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, back to Mouscron again, and is now at Mainz.
The 22 year old moved to the Bundesliga club on a season long loan in August, with the plan being he’d get games there to progress. Liverpool have the striker on a contract lasting until June 2023, so clearly have faith they’ll be able to use him or cash-in at some stage in the future.
So far this season he’s appeared in six Bundesliga games, but has only managed 146 minutes across those matches. He hasn’t played at all since early December, and hasn’t even been included in a match-day squad so far this year.
This is leading to doubts around his future, and Kicker report there’s a possibility Liverpool could cancel the loan and then send their player to a league where the transfer window is still open.
Rouven Schröder, Mainz’s sports director is quoted as saying: “There were and there are opportunities, but ultimately Liverpool FC and their management have the final decision.”
Awoniyi hasn’t made enough of the chances given to him, believes Schröder, yet the Mainz official accepts the player is working hard to get back into contention.
Examples of countries Liverpool could send the attacker to include Austria, Czech Republic, Russia and USA.
